Croatia Airlines opening new doors to Osijek-Baranja County
Osijek-Munich route connecting east of Croatia directly with Europe
23rd September 2021, Osijek – At the initiative of the Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, the Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport, Croatia Airlines and Osijek Airport have today signed a business cooperation agreement in Osijek, thanks to which Croatia’s flag carrier will start operating direct international flights on the Osijek-Munich route. This will connect the East of Croatia with Europe, create the conditions for the advancement of tourism, and make travel for both the residents and business community of the Osijek-Baranja County easier and faster. The agreement was signed by Jasmin Bajić, CEO and President of the Management Board of Croatia Airlines, and Ivan Kos, General Manager of Osijek Airport.
Croatia Airlines is introducing scheduled international flights on the Osijek-Munich route for the first time in the company’s history. Flights are planned in the period from 15th November 2021 to 14th January 2022 twice a week – on Mondays and Fridays. Passengers on this route will fly aboard a 76-seat Dash 8-Q400 aircraft.
– We’re glad that, during the winter, we’ll offer the residents of Slavonia a direct air link with the German market; more specifically, flights to a major European air transport hub via which they’ll be able to travel around the world. I believe that direct flights from Osijek to Munich will contribute to the development of the potential for tourism and economy of both the Osijek-Baranja County and the city of Osijek, whilst strengthening the business operations of Osijek Airport, and making it an even more important transport point. The introduction of this new route is confirmation of our continuous care for and investment in the provision of transport connections to all of Croatia’s regions, and of the important role that Croatia’s flag carrier plays in the transport infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia – said Jasmin Bajić, CEO and President of the Management Board of Croatia Airlines.
The General Manager of Osijek Airport, Ivan Kos, noted:
– I have been working at the airport for a little over four months, and would like to take the opportunity today to highlight three key areas of activity in the coming period. These three key areas are partnership with all of Croatia’s airports and Croatia’s flag carrier, the development of the long-term potential of Osijek Airport, and finally the area that is of most interest to everyone in the here and now, and that we all would like to see more of – flights, flights, flights. It is my desire to strengthen Osijek Airport through daily collaboration and partnership with Croatia’s other airports. We have been working and continue to work full steam ahead, but I believe that every step we take today must be with a view to a sustainable future. The second of the three key areas of activity includes the development of a master plan, the renovation of infrastructure, land consolidation and land clearing, and defining our airport’s future strategic partners. To attach symbolic significance to it, we wanted our first collaboration to be with Croatia Airlines, although we’re also talking to foreign airlines, which you’ll hear about in more detail on some other occasion. It’s up to all of us not to fly from Osijek to Munich this one winter alone, but to make flights between Osijek and Munich stable, long-term, and well-filled. In wanting to make sure that the aircraft flying between November and January are as full as possible, the time ahead of us is promotion time. Let us all hope for the normalisation of public health and safety conditions, and good luck to us all.
Ivan Radić, Mayor of Osijek, highlighted:
– Today’s signing of a business cooperation agreement between Osijek Airport and Croatia Airlines, and the launching of a new route between Osijek and Munich marks the achievement of one of our goals, which is that the city of Osijek must be a regional transport centre by all means of transport – by air, road, rail, and river. The route’s promotion slogan says As Little As 100 Minutes, highlighting that we’re as little as 100 minutes away from Munich, or rather that Munich is as little as 100 minutes away from Osijek. It is particularly important to underscore that we’re connected to the whole world via Munich, given that Munich offers direct flights to Frankfurt, Berlin, London, Vienna, Paris, and many other destinations around the world. The time has come to put the coordinates of Osijek on the world map again. I congratulate both Osijek Airport and Croatia Airlines on this move, and will make sure that I visit Munich at the earliest opportunity.
Ivan Anušić, the Osijek-Baranja County Prefect, said:
– The Osijek Airport revitalisation project is confirmation of collaborative work and activities between all local self-government units, including collaborative efforts and activities between the City of Osijek and the Osijek-Baranja County. The Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, Oleg Butković, will also be visiting us soon. With the minister, we’re looking to launch the big passenger terminal building renovation project, which will contribute to the improvement of operations at Osijek Airport. As for the newly launched Osijek-Munich route, our goal is to not only keep it running throughout the entire year, but also to introduce other international routes.
