Osijek connected with Munich and the rest of the world all year round
9th March 2022, Osijek – Croatia Airlines, and Osijek Airport are continuing to collaborate on developing the international Osijek–Munich route. It was decided that the Osijek–Munich route is to become a year-round route, which is to ensure that passengers from the Osijek-Baranja County have access to a direct air connection with Europe throughout the entire year.
It is worth recalling that direct flights between Osijek and Munich were introduced at the initiative of the Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, the Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, the Osijek Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport. This resulted in Croatia Airlines signing a business cooperation agreement with Osijek Airport, based on which Croatia’s flag carrier introduced direct international flights between Osijek and Munich for the first time in the company’s history in the winter period (i.e., from 15th November 2021 to 14th January 2022). This meant that the East of Croatia was now connected with Europe by air as well.
Thanks to this collaboration having been excellent so far between all the partners involved in this project, the results achieved, and great market demand for flights between Osijek and Munich, space has been created for improving the route further. As a result, the Osijek-Munich route will continue to be available throughout the entire year, on which scheduled flights will be operated every Monday and Friday starting from 2nd May this year.
Continuing to collaborate and fly on the Osijek-Munich route has created the conditions necessary for making travel easier and faster for the residents and businesspeople of the Osijek-Baranja County, as well as for other travellers. This has, in turn, also created the conditions necessary for enhancing Croatia’s economy and tourism.
– From our exceptional initial collaboration during the winter with our partners, the Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, the Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, the Osijek Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport, we have arrived at a point where we can now introduce a new, high-quality year-round route, which will, if we draw strength from our synergism, ensure the maintenance of a direct air connection with the German market throughout the entire year. In other words, the maintenance of flights to a major European air transport hub, via which passengers will be able to travel around the world. It makes me happy to know that we’ll contribute to the development of the potential for tourism and economy of the East of Croatia, that is, of both the Osijek-Baranja County, and the city of Osijek, whilst strengthening the business operations of Osijek Airport, and making it an even more important transport point, aware of the importance of the role that Croatia’s flag carrier plays in the transport infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia – said Jasmin Bajić, CEO and President of the Management Board of Croatia Airlines.
– Once our first business collaboration becomes lasting and long-term, and once our first international route from Osijek Airport transforms from being temporary to being permanent, or a year-round service, it means that we are on the right track both in terms of re-positioning our airport, and developing Osijek as a destination. Allow me to thank everyone for their part in this collaboration, from the Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, Oleg Butković, the Osijek-Baranja County Prefect, Ivan Anušić, the Mayor of Osijek, Ivan Radić, to the CEO and President of the Management Board of Croatia Airlines, Jasmin Bajić. I would also like to thank all the media for their support in promoting this important route, which will surely turn into a well-established connection not only with Germany, but also the rest of Europe – said Ivan Kos, General Manager of Osijek Airport.
– Continuing to partner with Croatia Airlines and introducing year-round flights from Osijek is one of the very first steps towards the revitalisation of our airport and strengthening its capacity. In collaboration with the relevant ministry, a project is well under way that includes expanding and modernising the airport’s infrastructure and all the accompanying facilities of the passenger terminal building. In aiming to get the airport ready to receive larger aircraft in the future, the required project documentation for the expansion of Osijek Airport is also being prepared. In recent years, the Osijek-Baranja County has been receiving positive signals from economic indicators, while the development of continental tourism has been gaining speed. The introduction of year-round flights on the Osijek-Munich route, as well as of other routes that have been planned, will surely contribute to our economy gaining momentum as well – said Ivan Anušić, the Osijek-Baranja County Prefect.
– This route has connected Osijek with a major European air transport hub, and, in turn, with the whole world. The fact that this route is about to transform into a year-round route is a big deal, indeed. This continuity will surely contribute to the development of our economy, particularly at Osijek’s Nemetin Industrial Zone. The proximity of our airport is one of the reasons why Osijek is attractive to investors. Osijek is not a seasonal city, Osijek lives all year round. The Osijek-Munich route not only validates this fact, but also instantiates it – said the Mayor of Osijek, Ivan Radić.
